Preface
Researchers worldwide strive to develop innovative materials and technologies to improve sustainability in the building and construction sector. Innovative technologies require new design concepts related to creating materials with mechanical properties tailored for structural purposes to ensure applicability in engineering practice.
The Fifth European and Mediterranean Structural Engineering and Construction Conference (EURO MED SEC 5) “Developing Materials and Structures for Sustainable Engineering” is a significant social and scientific event organized by the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) in May 2024. This conference in Vilnius, recently celebrating its 700th anniversary, provides a platform for discussing the challenging issues in structural and materials engineering and building management. The conference theme is particularly timely, given the latest trends in engineering, such as the increasing importance of sustainability issues, the development of innovative and renewable building materials, advanced digitalization and automatization of construction processes, additive manufacturing, and the rising significance of legal topics.
The conference proceedings represent an example of global collaboration, featuring 80 papers from 23 countries . This diverse collection includes various research works and case studies from scientists and practitioners worldwide. The topics cover several aspects of structural, material, and architectural engineering, design methods, actions on structures, construction materials, steel and composite structures, structural analysis, reliability and risk management, sustainability, project and construction management, cost analysis, legal affairs, and other related fields. The editors, external reviewers, and technical correctors have meticulously reviewed each manuscript’s technical content and formatting issues.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, the editors express heartfelt gratitude to all the authors and external reviewers, whose contributions have been invaluable in shaping the proceedings and the conference. The extensive support of the Scientific Committee Members and the ISEC Society in all aspects of the conference organization is also sincerely appreciated. The Conference Organizers also wish to deeply thank the VILNIUS TECH authorities and staff for the technical and logistic support and for providing the facilities and infrastructure for the technical sessions.
