Ecuador's capital city is Quito. It has an estimated population of 2.8 million people in its urban area. At 9,350ft (2,850m) above sea level, it is the highest capital in the world and the closest to zero latitude - S 0° 13' 47.46".
Quito's historic colonial downtown is one of the largest and best preserved in the Americas, having been designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1978.
Mountain ranges surround the city. Pichincha is to the west, with smaller hills to the east. The Equator is 40 minutes north of the city center, and the largest active volcano, Cotopaxi, is 40 minutes south.
