The Teleférico (cable car) starts at the base station on the western side of Quito at about 2,950 m (9,678 ft) above sea level. It rises up the slopes of the Pichincha volcano, reaching the summit station, Cruz Loma, at around 4,050 m (13,287 ft). The ride from base to top takes roughly 15 minutes.
From the cabins, you can see Quito’s unique north–south valley, stretching for more than 30 km (19 mi). On clear days, distant snowcapped volcanoes are visible: Cotopaxi (5,897 m / 19,347 ft), Cayambe (5,790 m / 18,996 ft), Antisana (5,758 m / 18,891 ft), and Chimborazo (6,263 m / 20,548 ft).
